A "Persian blue" turquoise ring with Arabic calligraphy carved on its sides. A tiny bit of matrix can still be seen in this stone, attesting to its natural origin. The blue hues of turquoise are due to the presence of either iron or copper impurities. The largest producer of fine quality turquoise historically has been Iran, but the United States and China have taken over as the largest producers in the common day market.
